Featuring the lyrics “I catch a paper boy. But things don’t really change. I’m standing in the wind”, this Marks and Spencer advert music is ‘Modern Love’ by David Bowie. The legendary English singer-songwriter released the track in 1983 as the third single from his fifteenth studio album ‘Let’s Dance’.
Modern Love peaked at number 2 on the UK singles charts and was one of the songs Bowie performed at Wembley Stadium in 1985 for the Live Aid concert. This is however not the first time this tune has been used in an ad. A rerecorded duet version with Tina Turner featured in a commercial for Pepsi back in 1987.
Looking to give a boost to the retailer’s fashion image and sales for the coming season, the 30-second ‘Women’s: Must-Haves’ advert video was posted to the M&S YouTube channel on 3 September, 2018.
