Halifax Advert 2016: ‘The People Who Give You Extra’ – Cartoon feline Top Cat visits the bank in search of a mortgage.

Even though the only piece of music played in this ad is the original Top Cat theme tune, I thought the commercial was worth a mention for its comedic and nostalgic value alone.
The ad for Halifax mortgages stars characters from the early 60’s cartoon series Top Cat, including Benny the Ball, Brain, Choo-Choo, Fancy-Fancy, Spook, Officer Dibble and of course, TC himself.
Clearly expecting a hard time getting his loan application approved, Top Cat enlists the help of Benny on violin to give his sob story that extra little emotion, and it certainly seems to work.
Without any requests for financial records or proof of earnings, TC and friends are instantly giving the nod. With that kind of back story and backing music, perhaps the gang should audition for Britain’s Got Talent or The X Factor while in the country.
The advert ends with Officer Dibble finding the gang back in town, this time living in a luxury multi-storey trash can. For those of you unfamiliar with the original cartoon series, this isn’t because TC failed to keep up his repayments. It’s actually a big step-up from his usual home of a basic back-alley dustbin.
This 1 minute version of the ad was posted to Halifax’s YouTube channel on the 22nd of April, 2016 and should premiere during that nights episode of Gogglebox. Filmed in a London branch of Halifax, this is expected to be the first of a long-running ad campaign for the British mortgage provider.
