Available To Download Via: Amazon or iTunes.

This ad from furniture retailer DFS uses a track called ‘The Nitty Gritty’, which is performed by the American soul music singer Shirley Ellis. The song was written by Ellis’s producer and manager, Lincoln Chase.

The record was released in 1963 and went on to reach number 8 in the US Billboard Hot 100.

Gladys Knight & The Pips then brought out a Motown cover version in 1969, managing number 19 in the charts.

In addition to ‘The Nitty Gritty’, New York soul and pop vocalist Shirley Ellis is also famous for 1964’s ‘The Name Game’ and 1965’s ‘The Clapping Song’.

DFS’s Autumn 2015 commercial shows some of their workshop craftsmen and craftswomen getting prepared for the festive rush. The ad promises viewers their sofa will be hand-made and with them in time for Christmas.

I know what your thinking, how could you possibly have a DFS advert without even the slightest mention of a sale? Well fear not as the film rounds off by informing us the new season sofas are currently half price.

The lyrics from ‘The Nitty Gritty’ featured in the DFS ad go a little something like this: Let’s (lets), get (get), right (right), on down (on down) to the real (to the real) nitty gritty (nitty gritty). One, two, nitty gritty now yeah (yeah), mmm (mmm, mmm) nitty gritty ooowee. Right down to the real nitty gritty.

Created especially for ITV’s 2015 Text Santa appeal, take a look at this amusing knitted version of the DFS ad:
