Co-op Christmas Advert – Composer and song information for The Co-operative Food’s ‘Ice’ TV commercial.
Song Title: Boléro.
Composer: Maurice Ravel.
Available To Download From: Amazon and iTunes.
There’s a good chance you’ll already recognise the soundtrack to the Co-op’s new festive ad, but perhaps you can’t remember where from or what it’s called.
This piece of music’s name is ‘Bolero’ and as the advert hints at, is probably best known here in Britain for its link to ice skaters Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean. Many people in this country were first introduced to Bolero after the pair used it to accompany their gold-medal-winning performance at the 1984 Sarajevo Winter Olympics.
Since then the song was used in each series of ITV’s celebrity skating show ‘Dancing on Ice’, where Torvill and Dean appeared as coaches. Given all the slipping and sliding on ice taking place in The Co-operative advert, there really was only one song choice available.
The ad shows a young man going down his local Co-op store to pick up some ice for a party. After noticing on his journey that the weather conditions were making it far too dangerous for his elderly neighbour to go out, the youngster generously decides to drop off some supplies outside the gentleman’s front door.
If the guy on the left of screen at the start and end of the video looks familiar to you, that’s probably because he’s the actor who used to play Darren Hughes in the BBC drama series ‘Waterloo Road’. His name is Mark Beswick.
The above 1-minute version of the commercial was added to The Co-operative Food’s YouTube channel on the 3rd of December, 2015.
